A pickpocket was arrested after a girl unwittingly took snapshots of him as he was stealing her friend's smartphone in southern China's Hunan province, news website reports.

The two friends, who love taking pictures of each other, reported the theft to the police after discovering the incriminating photos on the mobile phone.

The incident happened while the two friends were walking down a passageway at the Zhuzhou Central Plaza at around 3 p.m. last Friday, according to Zhuzhou Evening News.

Xiao Jia put her iPhone 6s handset in the right pocket of her jacket and started eating a barbecued chicken wing on a stick.

Xiao Yue, who was walking ahead of Jia, took candid snapshots of her friend, after which they continued strolling around the plaza.

Moments later, Jia realized she had lost her phone, and told her friend that she was sure she had put it inside her coat pocket just a few minutes ago.

Yue remembered that she took snapshots of her friend earlier and decided to review the pictures from her smartphone.

Both were shocked to see in a series of pictures a middle-aged man approaching Jia from behind and stealing her Apple handset.

Armed with the photographic evidence, the girls reported the incident to the local police, who were able to identify the suspect and arrest him on Monday. Jia recouped her handset at 8:30 p.m.

The suspect, surnamed Jiang, readily admitted to the theft, saying that he felt relieved that the police had caught him.

He said he had been losing sleep since Yue's snapshots of the theft were published on a local evening newspaper.

Accounts of the incident were widely circulated on social media, with netizens saying that good food brings good luck and taking selfies during meals is important.
