HKUST breaks into top three in QS Asia university rankings

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has outperformed the University of Hong Kong (HKU) this year in the QS Asia University Rankings, as it took the No.3 spot.
HKU, meanwhile, dropped out of the top three for the first time in years, falling to the fifth position from the No.2 rank that it enjoyed in the previous survey.
Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University was ranked No.1 on the list of best Asian universities, while the National University of Singapore was in the second position.
Seven universities in Hong Kong made it into the list while four had made it to the top ten, news website HK01.com reports.
HKUST made it back to the top three slowly after it had lost its first place back in 2014.
As for HKU it fell three places to stand behind Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, which took the 4th rank.
Among others, the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) surpassed the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in rankings, but has dropped slightly from seventh last year to eighth in the latest survey.
Lingnan University has made a great leap forward, jumping nine places up the list and into the top 100 universities.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University climbed two places to the 27th, while the Baptist University of Hong Kong’s position remained unchanged at No.64.
Research from Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) shows that Hong Kong’s universities have great influence in the academic world, with six universities getting high scores regarding the ability to research and conduct academic papers, with HKUST particularly outstanding.
As to the universities in China, Fudan University has become the dark horse on the list, making it to No.7 by surpassing Peking University that ranks ninth.
Tsinghua University, meanwhile, dropped to the sixth place.
The QS rankings are based on ten criteria including academic reputation, employer’s rating, and teacher-to-student ratios. The surveys have been conducted since 2009.
HKUST welcomed the surge in its ranking, saying that it had always seen the QS as a reference on academic performance.
The university said it will continue to strive for excellence while providing the best education and innovative academic research.
