A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion that he had killed his girlfriend and tried to hide her body in an apartment in Tseung Kwan O.

On Tuesday night, police came to a hotel in Kowloon City to question a man over a purported offense of possession of dangerous weapons.

During the questioning, officers found the man's behavior suspicious, prompting them to conduct a search of an apartment that came up during the investigation.

As they were searching the unit in Po Lam Estate, a public housing estate in Tseung Kwan O, early Wednesday morning, the police found a woman’s body hidden in a storage compartment under the lower deck of a bunk bed.

The woman was found to have sustained multiple injuries and was certified dead at scene, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

It was determined that the dead woman, a 34-year-old who had been working as a waitress, had been the girlfriend of the man under investigation.

Initial inquiries led the police to suspect that she had been killed by her boyfriend, who had been unemployed, following a quarrel inside the apartment.

The body had bruises and suspected traces of her wrists and legs tied up, and was found covered in a blanket and hidden in a compartment under the bed.

She was believed to have been dead for several days.

Deeming it a crime scene, police arrested the man on the spot before making further inquiries.

Officers picked up some items inside the apartment, including three blankets, a jacket and a towel, in suspected connection with the case.

According to reports, the dead woman had filed a police report earlier in the week, saying a man had intimidated her with a knife and left.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the cause of her death.

Meanwhile, there is suspicion that that the pair had used the drug “Ice”, or methamphetamine, before their suspected fight.

An investigation is underway by the crime unit of the police's Kowloon East branch.
