The government aims to improve all public piers in the city, with 10 of them selected as the first batch to be renovated, Secretary for Development Michael Wong Wai-lun said.

Talking about the pier improvement scheme in his blog on Sunday, Wong said the renovated public piers will provide citizens and tourists more convenient access to attractions in the countryside and natural heritage sites.

According to Wong, the 10 piers in the initial phase of the project are mainly located in remote places.

Among them are Sham Chung, Lai Chi Chong, High Island and Kau Sai Chau, all of which are located in Sai Kung, Pak Kok Tsuen and Yung Shue Wan on Lamma Island, Tung Ping Chau and Yi O on Lantau, Lai Chi Wo near Sha Tau Kok and Shek Tsai Wan on Ma Wan, The Standard reported.

"The Civil Engineering and Development Department has carried out feasibility studies and preliminary designs for the 10 piers and environmental assessment reports for those located within marine parks," the newspaper quoted Wong as saying.

Wong said he believes "the renovated piers will facilitate the promotion of green and cultural tourism, allowing citizens and tourists to know more about attractions in the countryside and natural heritage", the newspaper reported.

As one of the 10 piers, the Pak Kok Pier, located in the northern part of Lamma, is currently being used by about 400 ferry passengers a day, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reported.

As it does not allow passengers to board a boat by crossing a platform, people have to hop on the bow, which can be dangerous if there are big waves, according to The Standard.

Under the proposed design, the pier after renovation will allow boats to berth side-on instead of head-on, making boarding simpler and safer, and it will be equipped with more facilities such as a Wi-Fi hotspot and a drinking fountain.
