New levy and more RVMs to boost waste recycling efforts

To move toward the city’s long term waste reduction goal, the government is proposing a recycling levy on makers and importers of plastic beverage bottles.

At the same time, the government is also suggesting rebates to encourage the public to return such plastic beverage containers, which can then be supplied to local recyclers for turning into recycled materials, creating a circular economy.

Plastic beverage containers are usually made up of mono-material which is relatively easy to handle and has a higher recycling value.
If properly separated at source for collection and treatment, such material can be turned into useful resources more effectively, The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) said.

The consultation period will last for three months until May 21.

In another effort to boost the collection of plastic drinks bottles, the EPD is also boosting the number of Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) to 60 at public venues and government facilities. These RVMs will provide an instant rebate of 10 HK cents to each bottle returned.
