The HK$120 million vaccination lucky draw
Who doesn’t like lucky draw?
You might not win any big prize yet but you have a good chance in the city’s largest-ever HK$120 million vaccination pool sponsored by various generous tycoons.
A week after the eye-popping giveaway of a HK$10.8 million one-bedroom flat at Grand Central in Kwun Tong, thanks to Sino Group and Chinese Estates, we saw many different offers, unfortunately, none provides that kind of excitement.
Right, the top four property developers all give away eight-digit figure gifts in their own special way, but no one offers an apartment any more.
Instead, most give all sorts of company-related products from iPhones 12 (Smartone and Hutchison Telecom) to shopping coupons. Meanwhile, Henderson Land is giving away 300 taels of 999 gold, although it has no gold business.
Of course some, like a one-year stay at any Shangri-la hotels in 76 countries are more attractive than others, for example, a one-year buffet dinner at any Nina hotels (possibly a Guinness World Record if one doesn't get overweight after).
Still, no one is smarter than Cheung Kong group, which offers HK$20 million worth of prizes to be spent within its sprawling business empire. Lucky winners of the vaccine lottery will get coupons ranging from HK$50,000 to HK$5 million.
The top-prize winner can use the voucher to pay for a residential property from Cheung Kong (though rather likely the winner would have to top up under the current booming property market).
Sun Hung Kai Properties is giving away HK$10 million, in the form of iPhones, staycation, membership, catering and shopping coupons. It is worth noting that half of the prizes would go to its staff, well, lucky if you are one of them.
New World Development is also creative and sympathetic enough to come up with a HK$5 million – HK$1,000 each to 5,000 grassroot citizens selected by four leading social welfare groups with a plan to distribute within this month. It plans to give away another HK$5 million in a similar way in the second phase.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam thanked the private sector for supporting the "Early Vaccination for All" campaign, with vaccination leave and numerous rewards.
She must be also happy to see an increasing daily rate of vaccination take up since the free flat offer was announced in late May.
About 1.58 million people have taken their first jab according to the latest figure. That would put the chance of getting the flat about one in two million. But surely, the winning chance will get slimmer if the vaccination incentives keep boosting the vaccination rate.
Perhaps it is easier to hope and win a staycation and buffet coupon.
