Apple Inc. is expected to launch a new model of iPhone in August, one month earlier than industry observers were generally expecting, Taiwan's Economic Daily News reported on Friday, citing unnamed supply-chain sources.

The basic version of iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch screen will hit stores in August, and a 5.5-inch or 5.6-inch advanced model will be released in September, the report said, without specifying the markets where the models will be launched.

About 80 million iPhone 6 handsets will be produced this year, 33 percent higher than the market forecast of 60 million units.

The larger screen size of the new models, from 4 inches in previous ones, could help Apple Inc. regain market share from rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and HTC Corp., which have launched new flagship smartphone models recently.

Taiwanese iPhone contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. was said to have been informed by Apple to start production in late June, while Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) component suppliers have also received large orders from the US smartphone giant, the report said. GaAs, a critical component for supporting cellphone functionality, holds the foremost position in the supply chain.
