Words by Lawrence Yu
This collaboration marks a groundbreaking moment for Tissot, seamlessly blending Swiss craftsmanship with the iconic 1970s design and the vibrant world of manga pop culture. The PRX Mazinger Z (Great Mazinger) Special Edition collection invites new fans to step into this dreamy universe while offering longtime enthusiasts a nostalgic and joyful journey back in time.
A celebration of artistry and legacy, this release bridges past and present in the most stylish way possible.
This special edition watch seamlessly blends the PRX’s iconic retro design with the signature elements of the beloved anime series. Both icons debuted in the 1970s, with the manga captivating Europe starting in 1978—the same year the original PRX Seastar model made its debut.
The timepiece features a 40mm 316L stainless steel case and a striking blue dial inspired by the signature hue of Mazinger Z. Accented with a radiant Super-LumiNova® yellow glow, the dial showcases the robotic hero’s silhouette. A crescent-shaped seconds hand and intricately engraved automatic movement dial enhance the nostalgic appeal for dedicated fans.
Adding a touch of authenticity, the inner edge of the dial is adorned with the original Japanese title, “UFO ロボ グレンダイザー” (UFO Robot Grendizer), reflecting the sincerity and depth of this collaboration between Swiss watchmaking excellence and Japanese anime artistry.
This timepiece is more than just a watch—it’s a celebration of cultural icons and a collector’s dream, brimming with sophistication and sentiment.
At the heart of this extraordinary timepiece lies the Powermatic 80 movement, offering an impressive 80-hour power reserve. Enhanced with a Nivachron™ balance spring, it ensures exceptional precision and reliability, setting a new standard for modern watchmaking.
Protected by a sapphire crystal face and a mineral glass case back, this special edition not only guarantees durability but also reveals a window into the intricate craftsmanship, paying homage to the series’ iconic elements. With water resistance up to 10 bar (100 meters/330 feet) and a sculpted crown, the watch is designed to excel in any environment.
Completing the design is a robust metal bracelet, inspired by the signature style of the 1970s. Engineered for maximum comfort, it wraps the wrist with both strength and elegance. This is more than a watch—it's a tribute to timeless innovation and enduring style.
The watch box is uniquely designed, inspired by Mazinger Z's (Great Mazinger's) iconic spacecraft, the "Spazer", making it truly distinctive. The original creator, Go Nagai, remarked: "What’s fascinating is that UFO Robot Grendizer—Mazinger Z—and Tissot’s PRX watch both originated in the 1970s. They come from entirely different worlds, yet this collaboration carries a very special significance."-
