Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has pledged to block the sale in the United States of children’s products deemed unsafe or illegal by American regulators.
The Chinese e-commerce giant is taking the move in response to a request by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The commission said it has a list of five to 15 illegal or recalled products, including baby seats and high-powered magnets, that it plans to ask Alibaba to block.
Alibaba had more than 300 million active buyers on its platforms last year. The majority of these buyers are in China, although a growing number are coming from the US and elsewhere overseas, the newspaper said.
China supplies about 90 percent of the toys by value in the US, and four of every five recalled products in the US come from overseas, according to the commission.
Alibaba is also working with Western brands to clamp down on fake and unauthorized products on its platforms, the report said.
