More than 100 cases of upskirt photo taking reported on MTR

Hong Kong’s railway police received 105 reports of upskirt photo taking on the MTR system last year.

However, the number was 4.5 percent fewer than the previous year, Ming Pao Daily reported Monday, citing police statistics.

The victims were aged between 14 and 54.

Meanwhile, the devices used by those who take photos up the skirts of females have proliferated beyond smartphones and include cameras attached to pens, watches and shoe tips.

Upskirt cases accounted for most of the 146 indecent assaults reported on the MTR system last year, which was 25.1 percent lower than the year before.

The victims were mostly females, aged between 13 and 68, and nearly 90 percent of them reported the incidents to the police by themselves.

Of the indecent assault cases, 104 were solved. The culprits were all males, aged between 16 and 69, and included insurance agents, construction workers and students.

Despite the drop, the police said indecent assaults on the MTR system, which handles 5.3 million passengers a day, still require great attention.

A total of 1,099 crimes were reported in Hong Kong last year, 7.6 percent fewer than the previous year.

Among the 579 people arrested, 58 were from the mainland.

The number of cases involving money scams jumped the most, 93.6 percent year on year, to 91 in 2014.

Police have enhanced security patrols on the MTR since last year, including officers from the emergency and tactical units.
