If you’re a celebrity, you have to do it in style. What would the paparazzi say if you didn’t?
And so when Chinese rock star Wang Feng finally popped the question to his girlfriend, actress Zhang Ziyi, he couldn’t afford anything less than to employ the services of a white drone, which carried a diamond engagement ring.
All along Zhang probaby thought the occasion was just a party that Wang organized for her on the occasion of her 36th birthday. But Saturday night’s affair in Beijing was to be more than that.
Wang, 44, got down on one knee and offered the ring to the beauteous star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha.
According to Shanghai Daily, quoting online mainland reports, Wang said: “We have experienced sweet times and bitter times, and I wish you great happiness. I hope that I have the chance to take care of you when we both get old.”
A tearful Zhang said “yes” to the cheers of friends. Wang also gave her a ruby bracelet as a birthday gift.
Reports said the ring was from British jeweller Moussaieff, and could cost between 30 million (US$4.8 million) and 100 million yuan. The entire bill for the party is said to be more than a million yuan.
The party had the theme of sheep, 2015 being the year of the sheep and the sheep being Zhang’s zodiac sign.
On Sunday, a Weibo account widely deemed to be Zhang’s had a picture of fireworks with the words “I do”, according to the newspaper. Wang later retweeted the post and added his own message: “Thank you for completing my life.”
Needless to say, both posts have gone viral on social media.
Most of the netizens’ comments were good wishes for the couple, but others couldn’t help themselves but mention the couple’s past romantic entanglements.
Wang has been married twice and has two daughters, the report said. He announced his divorce from his second wife in 2013, shortly after he met Zhang.
The love affair reportedly started when Wang met Zhang’s parents at a casino in Macau, and he apparently did something that helped them to take home a huge amount of winnings. When Zhang met Wang at a party, she thanked him for his help. And Wang soon became a frequent guest at the family home.
The pair were spotted at a concert by pop star Eason Chan in Hong Kong in July 2013 shortly after Zhang was said to have broken up with boyfriend Sa Beining, a staff member of China Central Television.
Wang officially announced his relationship with Zhang at his concert in Shanghai on Nov. 9. Zhang was in the audience.
Zhang has had a number of boyfriends before Wang, including film director Zhang Yimou, action star Jackie Chan, and Eric Fok, grandson of Hong Kong tycoon Henry Fok Ying-tung.
Zhang also reportedly got involved with Vivi Nevo, a shareholder of media conglomerate Time Warner, but they separated in 2010.
Wang married his first wife, Qi Dan, a television anchor from central Sichuan province in 2003, but they divorced a year later. He also had a relationship with an 18-year-old model, which produced a daughter, but they broke up without getting married.
Wang’s second wife Kang Zuoru gave birth to a daughter in 2012, but the relationship also foundered, the newspaper said.
But past is past, and the present is all roses. Here’s hoping a great future for the couple.
