Tencent Holdings Ltd. (0700.HK) expects to launch a self-developed drone in May, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reported Friday.
The remote-control four-rotor craft, developed with Shenzhen Nine Stars Technology Co. Ltd., will be available on e-commerce site JD.com for 5,999 yuan (US$957).
Nine Stars made the product based on Tencent’s design. It is undergoing final testing, the report said.
Earlier, Xiaomi Inc., which makes one of the best selling smartphones in China, unveiled its investment in a drone company.
The drone, which uses Xiaomi’s own operating system, is expected to debut in the second half.
The Consumer Electronics Association estimates that global sales of civil drones will top US$130 million this year, or 400,000 units, up 55 percent from a year ago.
