A man was arrested for child abuse after he threw his seven-year-old son into the trunk of his car as punishment for naughty behavior, Apple Daily reported.
The child was not injured but has been placed under the custody of the Social Welfare Department.
The father surnamed Lee, 57, was living with his wife, 31, and two sons aged nine and seven in a public housing estate in Lam Tin. The couple are divorced but still living together, the newspaper said.
The four were having dinner at a restaurant in Domain Shopping Centre in Yau Tong on Saturday night, when the boy told his parents he was going to the washroom.
He didn’t show up again until Lee and his wife saw him at the parking area near their car. Scolded, the boy refused to get in the car and ran away, prompting Lee to chase him.
Out of anger, Lee threw the boy into the trunk of the car after catching him. Passers-by were shocked by what they saw and called the police.
Responding officers located Lee’s car near their home, about 1.4 km from the shopping center, and arrested both parents for child abuse.
Asked about his action, Lee said: “It’s no big deal putting him inside the trunk. What was I supposed to do? He wouldn’t listen to me.”
Dr. Chui Wing Hung, a heart surgeon, said locking up a child inside a small compartment could be life-threatening because of the insufficient supply of oxygen, especially when the child struggles.
