New kids on the block aim for eight District Council seats

The newly-formed political group Youngspiration will field candidates in the District Council and Legislative Council elections in a bid to spread the spirit of the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement.

Eight of its members will run in the District Council polls this November, including 23-year-old member Yau Wai-Ching, who will contest Priscilla Leung of the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong, and convenor Baggio Leung Chung-hang, who will take on Ip Kwok-him of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, Ming Pao Daily reported.

Established only three months ago, Youngspiration said they now have more than 100 members. Their target is to obtain seats in all the 18 district councils by 2019.

The eight members will run for District Council seats in Kwai Tsing, Yau Tsim Mong, Kowloon City, and Central & Western districts.

Baggio Leung said the group aims to become one of the three major political forces in Hong Kong in addition to the pro-establishment and opposition camps, and will focus on local issues in its campaign.

He said they do not mind competing head on with the pan-democrats and will not participate in traditional negotiations within the opposition camp aimed at avoiding competition for votes among themselves.
