Young mom leaves baby girl in Mong Kok fashion shop

A 20-year-old unmarried woman reportedly abandoned her five-month-old baby girl at a fashion boutique owned by the child’s father in Mong Kok, Apple Daily reported Wednesday.

The mother wanted to hand the baby to her father, who was 30 years old, but after being told that the man was not around at the time, she simply left the baby with a shop assistant and left.

The shop assistant called the police, who contacted the father. The father decided to take the baby home.

Investigation showed that the couple had a quarrel recently and the woman moved out of her partner’s home. The two later agreed that the man would look after the baby, hence the mother’s action on Tuesday.

The baby girl was taken to a hospital by an ambulance for a check-up and her conditions were fine.

According to barrister Albert Luk, the mother could be charged with violation of Article 27 of the Offences Against the Person Ordinance, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.

Luk said the mother should have sought help from a domestic relations court to ask the father for alimony and child support.
