Goat dinner lands python in trouble in Sai Kung

A Burmese python measuring over 10 feet was caught alive in Sai Kung on Monday after the reptile apparently gobbled up a cat and then killed two goats, swallowing one.

The dead goats, comprising a mother and her three-month-old baby, belonged to the New Being Oasis drug rehabilitation center, run by the Christian New Being Fellowship near the Lady MacLehose Holiday Village at Pak Tam Chung, Apple Daily reported.

The baby goat had been swallowed by the python while the mother’s body was lying nearby, it said.

After a worker at the center saw the reptile and alerted the police, authorities called in snake expert Dave Willott to the scene to catch the creature — said to be weighing 12 kilograms — and put it in a cage.

Hong Kong law forbids killing of such species.

The python had a hugely swollen belly, prompting Willot to suspect that it may have killed and eaten another small animal, probably a cat, before gobbling up the goat.

A pastor of the fellowship was quoted as saying that the python may have sneaked into the goat shed through a drain outlet.

After the reptile was taken to Sai Kung police station, it started to regurgitate the goat and finally spat out the whole mass with Willott’s help.

The python is now expected to be transferred to the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden.
