Macau tycoon gives away HK$1 mln after hole-in-one

It’s a long shot, but a hole-in-one in this instance had shorter odds than a million-dollar windfall in a single morning.

Nonetheless, a Macau tycoon thought his ace was worth celebrating in a big way, so he splashed out HK$1 million (US$129,000) on dozens of caddies and staff at a mainland golf club.

Chan Meng-kam, president of Golden Dragon Group Co. Ltd., gave HK$100,000 each to his five caddies and HK$10,000 to eight others who were on the bag of his playing partners, Apple Daily reported Wednesday.

And each of the 400 employees at the Chung Shan Hot Spring Golf Club in Zhongshan city, Guangdong province, received HK$1,000.

Chan, 52, is a Macau legislator and executive councilor. He also serves on the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the mainland’s highest political advisory body.

In the 2013 legislative council election, Chan received the highest number of votes.

Chan’s group of 12 players played in different flights on Saturday morning.

Chan punched his tee shot on the par-three 11th hole straight into the green, the ball rolling some distance before disappearing into the cup, according to a caddie.

Cheers were ringing all around as Chan reached for his mobile phone and instructed his driver over the din to take cash and lai see envelopes from his car and bring them over, the report said.

Still, some caddies were not impressed, saying Chan is a mediocre amateur player.

Local professional Wong Woon-man, who has hit several aces in his career, said these usually happen on par-three holes but hitting one largely depends on luck.

(For the record, experts put the odds of hitting a hole-in-one at 250,000 to one).

We’re assuming those guys missed the lai see shower.
