Hong Kong should consider collecting opinions on same-sex marriage after a recent landmark decision by the US Supreme Court making it legal in all 50 states.
The issue has split many societies but there is a chance to achieve a win-win situation with the right approach, Equal Opportunities Commission chairman York Chow told Commercial Radio.
Chow called on both sides of the issue to express their views in a harmonious manner.
On Monday, Choi Chi-sum, general secretary of advocacy group For Truth And Light, told public broadcaster RTHK that Hong Kong should allow room for people to disagree, even if same-sex marriage becomes legal in Hong Kong.
Choi said the issue of same-sex marriage in Hong Kong should not be based on the decision by five US Supreme Court judges, adding their own personal judgment had influenced the ruling.
Cyd Ho, spokesperson for gay rights group Big Love Alliance, said she hopes those who don’t accept equal rights for gay people could change their minds in the future.
