Two people were injured as a tree collapsed on Bonham Road in Mid-levels Wednesday morning, in the second such accident in Hong Kong in three days.
As authorities issued rainstorm and landslip warning signals, a tall tree came crashing on a street, injuring a man and a woman, Apple Daily reported.
The 53-year-old man was said to be a newspaper vendor while the other person was a 36-year-old Filipino maid who was passing along the street.
Fire services personnel arrived on the scene and rescued the two persons, who were then taken to Queen Mary Hospital for medical care.
According to RTHK, both were conscious when they were pulled out from the scene.
Meanwhile, the tree also hit a delivery van, although the driver was said to be unhurt.
Apple Daily quoted the driver as saying that he heard a loud crack and saw the tree fall down.
A passenger bus had a narrow escape as it was just a few meters away from the accident site, he said.
According to Cable TV, the tree was 30 meters tall, while other reports put the height at a smaller number.
The Hong Kong observatory reported heavy rain and thunderstorms this morning. More than 100 millimeters of rainfall had been recorded over the urban areas, with some western parts of Hong Kong Island even logging more than 200 millimeters.
According to the observatory, an active southwesterly airstream continues to affect the coastal area of Guangdong region. So the weather will remain unsettled and more showers are possible in the coming days.
