MTRC sued over sewage flooding in Choi Hung flat

A couple is suing MTR Corp. for damages after their Choi Hung flat was flooded with sewage on New Year’s Day.

The couple, surnamed Hung, are seeking HK$430,000 (US$55,480) in compensation and repair costs from the Hong Kong mass transit operator.

MTRC is accused of negligence resulting in sewage overflowing a toilet in the couple’s Clearwater Bay Road apartment.

The incident left a stench that lasted a month, according to a writ cited by Apple Daily.

A maid said her employers were injured while trying to scoop sewage from a washroom.

The couple were forced to move into a hotel during the two months the flat underwent repairs and renovation.

They said they had complained about seeping sewage to the company which sent a security guard and a cleaner instead of repairmen.

The company told them it was not responsible for incidents that happen inside a flat, the Hungs said.

They said that when MTRC finally sent a plumber, the pipes were not checked and no effort was made to find the source of the problem

And by the time the plumber decided to open a suspected obstruction five hours later, the flat had been flooded with sewage.

MTRC later blamed the incident on a clogged pipe which had been stuffed with trash and refused the couple’s demand for compensation.
