A section of a rail construction site in Guangdong province collapsed into a sinkhole, killing one worker and prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents.
The accident occurred at 10:30 a.m. in Chanping town Thursday when a sinkhole swallowed a section of the construction site in a rail station on the Dongguan-Huizhou line.
The site had been weakened by the sinkhole which had gobbled up a seven-seater van and ruptured gas and water mains on Wednesday, according to Apple Daily.
Workers were trying to reinforce the site when it caved, witnesses said.
It was the sixth collapse on a rail construction site in three years, raising concern about design flaws.
Changping, a suburban town in Dongguan, is home to many Hong Kong people.
It is served by cross-border transport.
Guangdong Pearl River Delta Intercity Railway Co. Ltd., the contractor of the urban rail project, said the collapsed site is not part of the line that is set to open by the end of the year.
The scheduled opening is unchanged, it said.
