An elderly man who fell off his motorcycle in a flooded street in central China’s Henan province lay dying as passers-by walked past him or approached him and left.
The incident was captured on a surveillance camera and triggered a social media backlash after the clip went viral.
The video shows three pedestrians approach the stricken man struggling in inches of water but stop short of helping him.
They are next shown leaving the scene.
It was raining heavily when the accident took place on Aug. 30 in the ancient imperial capital of Kaifeng, according to Apple Daily.
The man toppled over and fell on the street which was under a few inches of water.
He struggled to get up but failed while passers-by ignored him.
It took a while before some pedestrians came over and lifted him to the side of the street where he died.
Some netizens accused Kaifeng residents of being cold-blooded for ignoring someone in distress
Kaifeng is one of China’s six ancient capitals and is often dubbed as the cradle of Chinese civilization.
Incidents like this are taking place in many parts of China and the only difference is that they’re not caught on camera, so people don’t know about them, some commenters said.
Others said people are reluctant to help strangers for their own sake, citing instances when Good Samaritans were sued for compensation by people they tried to rescue.
