Beijing showers Tibet with ‘gifts’ on 50th anniversary

China is splashing out tens of billions of yuan in financial support for Tibet to mark the 50th foundation anniversary of the autonomous region.

The official People’s Daily is reporting that the package consists of unspecifiied projects, incentives and preferential policies.

A delegation from the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference led by its chairman, Yu Zhengsheng, has arrived in the Tibetan capital Lhasa bearing “gifts” from Beijing.

These include portable solar-powered televisions, butter tea makers and bowls and inscribed boards and cloth scrolls.

Also, paintings depicting five Chinese leaders – Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping — are set to replace those of the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, in Tibetan homes.

Xi directed officials to focus on the big picture in Beijing’s relations with Tibet and promote “unification, stability and anti-secession”, according to state media.
