One of the three men who left a seafood restaurant in Ngau Tau Kok on Tuesday night without paying their bill came back and settled the amount.
The man paid the HK$1,493 (US$192.6) bill on Thursday morning, and blamed their “negligence” on having drunk too much.
The restaurant owner, surnamed Li, accepted the man’s apology and decided not to press charges.
Employees of the restaurant were not aware of the unpaid bill until it was about to close at 4 a.m. Wednesday, or five hours after the three left.
Li said the restaurant’s CCTV camera might have helped in solving the “dine and dash” case.
The three men might have felt the pressure after the video clip was posted online, and so they decided to settle the bill, he said.
However, the payment and apology might not be enough to end the case.
Police and the Department of Justice still have the right to prosecute the men, even though they have been forgiven by the complainant, solicitor Vitus Leung said.
The three men could also sign a binding-over order for the case to be closed, he added.
