Why vending machine is such a great idea

Fresh eggs, rice packs, live crabs, pizza, fresh baguette, floral arrangements, even guitar strings and bike parts. In some countries, you can buy nearly anything from vending machines.

Hong Kong is not quite as innovative, but the city is fast catching up in terms of the variety of vending machines.

Some examples include vending machines for umbrellas, health products and printer ink refill. And soon, mall operator Link REIT is going to introduce fruit vending machines outside its wet markets.

Convenient to use, cheap to set up and easy to maintain are some of the key draws of vending machines. There is no need to hire someone to man them and they work 24/7.

The cost advantage is particularly obvious in Hong Kong. For instance, renting a vending machine slot in an MTR station often costs even less than placing an ad there, according to an RTHK report.

By installing a vending machine, you can both advertise your product and use it as a sales point. That’s why it’s such a great deal.

The most important decision in the vending machine business is picking the location. Traffic is the paramount consideration.

Some companies, such as Canon, can also identify the most potential districts based on sales and delivery records. For example, areas where there are lots of customers who bought their printers are ideal locations for ink cartridge vending machines.
