Another MTR escalator breakdown at Wong Tai Sin station

Another escalator malfunction occurred in an MTR station on Sunday night, the second in only four days, when an ascending conveyor suddenly stopped due to a floor plate displacement, Ming Pao Daily reported on Monday.

Fear gripped commuters going up to Exit D of the Wong Tai Sin MTR station after the escalator suddenly stopped with a bang at around 7:20 p.m.

Many of them ran down the steps of the escalator to get back to the station lobby, uncertain of what had happened. No one was reported hurt.

Responding MTR staff rushed to the scene to check the commotion. It turned out that a floor plate was displaced, and when it reached the top, it caused three other plates to be displaced as well and the escalator to stop.

The escalator was closed down shortly after the incident, and “out of order” notices were placed at the bottom and the top of the damaged escalator.

It was later covered with a green canvas, as technicians were contacted to check and repair it.

A similar incident occurred at the Quarry Bay station during the morning rush last Thursday when an escalator stopped after a 1.5-inch screw got stuck in the between the floor plates.
