A six-year-old girl, refusing to go to school, held a pair of scissors to her neck and threatened to kill herself.
The primary one student, who lives with her family in Sha Tin, became emotional while she was putting on her school uniform around 7 a.m. Wednesday, Ming Pao Daily reported.
Luckily, her 39-year-old father was able to grab the scissors and prevent any injuries.
The police was called and the case was classified as a suicide attempt.
Chan Pik-fai, a supervisor at the Boys and Girls Clubs Association of Hong Kong, said it is rare for children to threaten to kill themselves to avoid going to school.
However, children moving on to primary school from kindergarten could face intense pressure amid the increased workload, Chan said.
Frontline social workers have revealed that even children at a relatively young age face emotional and anxiety issues, and the situation is worsening, he said.
It is possible the girl did not understand the possible consequences of her action, and she might have thought it was just a way to avoid school, Chan said.
Chan recommended a short break from school for the girl, while the parents could get in touch with the girl’s teachers to sort out her problems.
Parents must reinforce their children’s understanding that they will always love them and help them resolve their problems, he added.
