Kowloon Tong AMC cinema to move to Yuen Long as rent skyrockets

A cinema that has operated for 17 years in Kowloon Tong will soon be relocated to Yuen Long, Apple Daily reported.

The theater’s operator said the landlord has decided to raise the rent to an unbearable level when its lease comes due in January.

The AMC cinema is located in Festival Walk, a shopping mall linked to the MTR Kowloon Tong Station.

Broadway Circuit, operator of the AMC chain in Hong Kong, announced the relocation on its Facebook page Saturday, saying Jan. 3 will be its last day before it moves to Yoho Town in Yuen Long.

Executive director Tessa Lau Siu-man said it is a pity to have to move the cinema and that many citizens had expressed their regret online.

She did not reveal by how much the rent will be raised but only said the new rent is “very astonishing”.

The new theater in Yuen Long will have eight movie halls, one of which will feature the IMAX 3D system with about 1,100 seats, making the cinema the biggest of its kind in the northwest New Territories, Lau said.

Meanwhile, the newspaper said it is rumored that the MCL Cinema chain will start to operate the theater at Festival Walk following several months of renovation work.
