Facebookers are talking about Taylor Swift but she’s not No. 1

Who in the world is Ed Sheeran?

If you’re like me, you have no idea, and neither does any of the people I’ve asked.

But online chatter about the man has been lighting up Facebook.

We have just been handed a list of the top 10 entertainers Facebook users have been talking about this year.

So we hit Wikipedia to dig up info on the mystery guy.

The entry, presumably written by a publicist, like most celebrity write-ups on the reference site, says Edward Christopher “Ed” Sheeran is a 24-year-old English singer-songwriter, musician and occasional actor.

He dropped out of high school at 16.

There are thousands of English musicians who are also unemployed actors and quit school, but why are Facebookers so hung up on him?

It turns out the guy has made it in America, and when you make it in America, you’re made.

Sheeran’s popularity abroad began in 2012 with a guest appearance on Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album, Red.

In the A Team, nominated for song of the year at the Grammy Awards in 2013, Sheeran performed with Elton John.

He then spent much of the year opening for Swift’s The Red Tour in North America and later sold out New York’s Madison Square Garden as a headline act.

Last year, he was nominated for best new artist at the 2014 Grammys.

The Facebook ranking puts him above Swift and third-placed Kanye West.

Caitlyn Jenner, the former Bruce, is No. 8, and Shakira brings up the rear.

But not that many people are talking about Adele, the English singer who recently turned every music chart upside down with her blockbuster hit Hello, at least not frequently enough to land her in the top 10.

The most talked about movies in the world include Furious 7, the last movie of Paul Walker, which was shown after his tragic car crash.

It is eclipsed only by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Game of Thrones has had the most people talking about their favorite TV show, and the US presidential election is trending as the most discussed global topic.

Did you notice there’s no mention of Donald Trump?

Maybe because Facebook can’t quite figure out whether he is an entertainer, a politician or his own TV show.

But people will be talking about him if he becomes US president, for good or ill.
