Trio of robbers beat up sales clerk at 24-hr store

Three robbers got away with HK$3,300 cash and several packs of cigarettes from a convenience store in Yuen Long, but they didn’t get far.

Police said the three men, aged 27, 28 and 36, went to a 7-Eleven store on Ma Tin Road at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Wearing hoodies and masks, two of the three pretended to want to buy cigarettes at the counter, Apple Daily reported Monday.

Instead, they sprayed an unidentified orange powder at the eyes of the part-time staffer, surnamed Li, and beat him up for 80 seconds, while the third man stood guard outside the store.

The trio fled after helping themselves to cash and cigarettes.

The entire incident, which lasted about three minutes, was captured by the store’s closed-circuit cameras.

Li called the police and was sent to hospital with head and eye injuries.

Police arrested the robbers shortly afterward at Town Park Road North, about 600 meters from the store.

The female owner of the store said she recognized the trio, who were of South Asian ethnicity and had visited the outlet before, possibly on a scouting expedition.
