Massage by Indonesian maid helps paralyzed employer recover

Don’t give up, an Indonesian maid told her employer, who was paralyzed on the left side of her face, neck and arm after surgery three months ago.

Every day, Siti Musyafaah continued to massage the 56-year-old Singapore woman, surnamed Cheng, resulting in her eventual recovery, Apple Daily reported Wednesday, citing the local Chinese newspaper Lianhe Wanbao.

Cheng, a single mother, said she could not move the left side of her face and neck and her left arm after undergoing surgery in a hospital in September.

The physiotherapist who treated her for between seven and eight hours a day told her it would be best to give up hope of recovery.

But Musyafaah encouraged Cheng, telling her she would definitely return to normal as long as she stayed strong.

Musyafaah, who has been working for Cheng as a domestic helper since 2010, had been massaging Cheng’s muscles regularly every day.

Many times, Cheng wanted to give up, as the massage was too painful, but Musyafaah’s encouragement kept her going.

Then, a “miracle” happened.

When Cheng woke up one day this month, she found that she was able to move her neck.

She and Musyafaah could not help holding each other and crying.

In the next few days, Cheng’s face, arm and back gradually regained their mobility.

Declining monetary reward for her help, Musyafaah said her employer and her children have treated her like family, so taking care of Cheng is what she ought to do.
