Here’s good news for residents of North District and Tai Po, where there has not been a single cinema for five years.
Multiplex Cinema Ltd. (MCL) said it will open a movie theater at Green Code Plaza in Fanling as soon as the third quarter of next year, Ming Pao Daily reported on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the company said it will expand its network to districts with less cinemas, adding that another one will be opened at South Horizons in Ap Lei Chau in March next year.
According to data from the Hong Kong Theatres Association, there used to be about 150,000 cinema seats in the city 20 years ago, but the figure has shrunk to 37,000, and the existing cinemas are not well distributed.
There was a theater called Fanling Cinema, but it closed five years ago.
A primary student, surnamed Yuen, said he is very excited that a new cinema will be built in the district.
“I have to go to Kowloon if I want to watch a movie, but we don’t have to do that in the future,” he said.
Legislator Tang Ka-piu said he once asked the government to put up a cinema in the district as part of its cultural amenities.
Tang said the authorities had originally planned to use the North District Town Hall as a temporary cinema, but now the venue could only be reserved for educational purposes.
“Maybe the number of visitors to North District has declined and the rent has gone down so a cinema operator could now afford the rent and open a cinema,” Tang added.
