Police probe photos of plane passenger with gun-like object

Chinese security officers have launched an investigation after two photos posted on social media show a man holding what appears to be a gun on a plane and pointing it to two men seated next to him.

The photos were believed to have been shared first on popular messaging platform WeChat on Sunday, and soon went viral on social forums in China, Mirror Evening News reported.

It is not clear which airline or flight the passengers were taking, but the photos were apparently taken while the plane was at the Beijing Capital International Airport.

One photo shows a man posing with the pistol-shaped object, looking extremely pleased and showing off, while the other shows the same person pointing the object at two men who pretend to be terrified.

In social forums, many netizens believed it was just a toy gun, while others said it was only a laptop charger.

On Tuesday morning the Beijing Capital International Airport Public Security Bureau said it was investigating the incident based on the photos.

According to Chinese law, firearms or other types of dangerous weapons are prohibited on flights, and an offender could face hefty fines or even sentenced to a prison term.
