Why hot desking is a good option for startups

Rentals in Hong Kong are softening a bit, but they are still very high compared to most major cities in the world. Securing a well-located office on reasonable terms is a challenge for business owners, especially startups.

A popular solution in recent years is hot desking– the practice of multiple workers sharing the same desk.

Not only is that cheaper, it also offers a lot of flexibility.

“There is no need to sign a long-term lease, or pay a substantial amount as security deposit. That will ease the cashflow pressure and is therefore particularly good for people starting a business,” John Henderson of Regus, which operates a chain of business centers, wrote in SMBWorld.

Money is not the only thing. In a traditional office, some co-workers may hardly meet or talk because they are seated far apart. Hot desking solves that problem and brings more opportunities for employees to interact or collaborate.

Most business centers offering hot desks are in prime commercial districts and relatively modern in design and fitting. Startups can leverage on a more up-market image and better office infrastructure with a small budget, Henderson noted.
