Sa Sa founder’s maid jailed for theft of luxury items

A domestic helper admitted stealing HK$50,000 worth of luxury items including handbags and bras from her boss, Eleanor Kwok Law Kwai-chun, a co-founder of cosmetic retailer Sa Sa International.

Irene Canoneo Gomera, a 34-year-old Filipino, was sentenced to two months in jail after she pleaded guilty to a series of thefts at her employer’s home on Island Road in Deep Water Bay before the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court, Apple Daily reported.

Her lawyer told the court it was Gomera’s first time to work as a domestic helper in Hong Kong, and she couldn’t control her urge to steal because it was the first time she saw so many luxury products in her life.

Gomera kept all the stolen items in her room and she did not sell a single item. Her boss fired her immediately after discovering the thefts.

Gomera is a single mother of two. Her kids are being taken care of by their grandparents.

The judge said the stolen items could not have been recovered had Kwok not checked her maid’s room.

Among the stolen items were branded handbags, T-shirts, socks, bras, umbrellas and phone chargers.
