Cop convicted for abusing power to get free sex from prostitute

A police inspector who got free sex from a prostitute was convicted of misconduct in public office, Headline Daily reported Friday.

Chu Chi-ho, 44, who is married, has been suspended from his job in the force’s Yau Tsim District.

The District Court heard Thursday that Chu refused to pay a prostitute HK$200 after receiving sexual services from her on May 28 last year.

He identified himself as a police officer and threatened to arrest the 25-year-old woman, a native of the Guangxi region who holds a two-way permit allowing her to travel to and from mainland China.

Chu ordered her to leave Hong Kong within three hours, or else he would keep her in custody for seven days.

The officer got to know the woman during an earlier police operation, and he knew an operation cracking down on sex workers who were working illegally was scheduled for the following day, the report said.

The judge scolded Chu, saying he should have arrested the prostitute for breaching her conditions of stay by working while she was in Hong Kong.

The fact that Chu told the woman to leave Hong Kong might also involve perverting the course of justice, the judge said.

The judge accepted the statements of the woman and her landlady, saying they had no reason to frame Chu, although he noted that their testimony about the time Chu made the threat did not tally.

Pleading for leniency, the defense lawyer said Chu would lose his job, residence in married quarters and pension.

Sentencing is scheduled for Thursday next week.

Chu remains in custody.
