Empty Kwun Tong flat yields HK$8 mln cash, diamonds to thieves

Burglars broke into an unoccupied flat in Kwun Tong and stole HK$8 million (US$1 million) in cash and diamonds.

The theft was discovered on Wednesday when a woman checked on the flat which has been empty since its 73-year-old owner left Hong Kong many years ago, Apple Daily reports.

The woman, surnamed Yeung, found a safe deposit box cracked open and divested of its contents.

The flat owner said it contained cash and diamonds.

He had asked Yeung, a family friend, to check the condition of the flat and how it was holding up against the weather.

Yeung reported the theft to the police.

No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.
