Two Dutchmen attacked Chinese on the streets of Amsterdam recently with milk powder, in the wake of bulk buying by Chinese that has stripped some supermarket shelves of infant formula.
A video clip posted on the internet showed Romé Terbeek and Kenzo Hanter looking around for Chinese in the city.
One victim was asked, “Do you want to buy milk powder?”
He said no but had milk powder poured onto his head all the same.
The pair attacked at least five Chinese people in this way, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.
The video aroused a backlash among Chinese living in the Netherlands.
One was quoted as saying that the duo lacked education, and the Dutch economy would suffer without the contributions of Chinese.
Sina.com reported that the two Dutchmen apologized on SBS6 television.
Meanwhile, they released a video on Facebook apologizing for their behavior, saying they weren’t targeting the Chinese but were only engaging in a prank.
Mainland Chinese have been buying up Dutch milk powder, making it a hot commodity on the local black market.
People have also been stealing the product for sale at inflated prices in mainland China.
In 2014 alone, the Netherlands recorded as many as 900 thefts of milk powder.
