Some 500 residents were evacuated from a residential building in Tseung Kwan O after bamboo scaffolding and safety nets being used for its renovation caught fire in the early hours of Thursday.
The fire broke out at 4:32 a.m. outside the 23rd floor of a building at King Ming Court, and was upgraded to No. 3 alarm in 41 minutes, Apple Daily reported. It was put out at 7:06 a.m.
Headline Daily said residents were awakened by the fire alarm in the middle of the night and they rushed to the ground in panic.
Six of the residents, including a pregnant woman and a 95-year-old woman, were taken to the Tseung Kwan O Hospital after they inhaled smoke.
The renovation of the external walls of Fai King House has been going on since the middle of last year.
Hong Kong Fire Services Central district commander Poon Wai-lun said the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
