Scholarism leaders planning political party

Core members of student activist group Scholarism are planning a new political party ahead of the Legislative Council election in September.

Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Oscar Lai head the yet-unnamed group which will have a socially oriented agenda, news portal HK01.com reports.

It will aim to influence politics but will not be a clone of the pan-democrat camp, Chow said.

She refused to make comparisons with localist groups Civic Passion and Hong Kong Indigenous, saying only that her party is evolving.

The group has 20 members and is in talks with different political groups including Youngspiration, Stand News reported.

Only Lai has confirmed plans to run in the Legco election where he is expected to contest a seat in Kowloon East.

Wong and Chow, both 19, don’t meet the minimum age requirement for candidacy.

Lai said some members of Scholarism are opposed to forming a political party and want the group to remain focused on student activism.
