A four-year-old boy died in Union Hospital in Sha Tin on Sunday, a casualty of Hong Kong’s winter flu season.
The boy had been suffering from flu symptoms for a week, Metro Daily reports, citing a hospital spokesman.
He fell into a coma about an hour after he was brought to the emergency unit with breathing difficulty, never having regained consciousness.
The cause of death was listed as “shortness of breath”.
The flu virus can cause acute brain swelling and breathing problems and could result in serious complications, especially among children six years old and below, Ming Pao Daily reports, citing pediatrician Dr. Yu Chak-man.
Yu said parents should immediately bring their children to a hospital if they look pale and sluggish or keep vomiting.
