Abbot expels monks after video of temple brawl goes viral

Monks, steeped in spiritual principles and devoted to long hours of meditation and prayers, are looked upon for their benevolence and peaceable nature.

But not these three brothers in faith who failed to check their tempers and were caught on video engaging in a brawl in the ancient temple of Yangzhou in eastern Jiangsu province.

The video clip was uploaded on Thursday and has since gone viral.

Such behavior, of course, cannot be tolerated by the abbot, who forthwith expelled them from the temple, Apple Daily reports.

The incident took place at the Ningguo Temple in the morning of April 24.

In the minute-long video, two monks are seen engaging in an awkward skirmish with several fellow men of the cloth, when another monk joins the fight by hitting one of the two with his mobile phone.

Visitors must have been surprised by the sight of the quarreling monks, not only because it’s unusual for monks to be seen fighting each other in public but also because they didn’t display the swift, balletic kung fu techniques of Shaolin monks they often see in the movies.

All the three protagonists in the melee are said to be mid-level managers of the temple, which is more than a thousand years old.

The brawl reportedly resulted from a disagreement over some management issues.

According to the official Xinhua news agency, the abbot announced on Wednesday that the three have been expelled, adding that it would be better to have less monks in the temple than have more who cannot behave themselves.

Observers say it is rare for a monastery to kick out monks as being treated that way is considered a huge disgrace for them.

Why not just a punishment that would make them learn their lesson and reform? Like have them pick up all the fallen leaves in the courtyard with a pair of chopsticks. Or have them keep each other company 24/7 until the hatred in their hearts turns into an overwhelming feeling of brotherly love.
