China traffic cop wins plaudits for saving drivers from sinkhole

A traffic police officer in China’s Zhejiang province has won much praise and gained instant fame after he saved motorists from a giant sinkhole last week.

In video footage that has gone viral, Li Weiqi, who was manning a traffic post on a busy road in Hangzhou city, can be seen quickly diverting vehicles after he noticed cracks on the highway.

Realizing that something was amiss, he put up traffic cones around the spot and warned drivers to move away from the area.

His quick thinking helped prevent what could have been a major tragedy, as the cracks soon developed into a 20-square-meter sinkhole, mainland media reported.

The incident took place as the Li was directing traffic in the afternoon on April 21.

Surveillance cameras captured his heroic action, which was later aired by domestic as well as foreign media outlets, including CNN.

The clip has gone viral since it was uploaded Wednesday, garnering many “likes” and shares.

Following his bravery, Li has been feted by the local government and given some medals.

As for the cause of the sinkhole, authorities believe leakage in a rainwater-collecting pipe may have resulted in soil erosion, leading to the giant hole on the highway.
