A courier received a 100,000 yuan (US$15,290) reward from the Guangzhou police for helping them seize 300 kilos of narcotics concealed in a package set for mailing overseas.
The man from Baiyun district, known in the local media as “Baiyun Courier Junior”, showed up in a Minions mask to collect the prize in a widely covered ceremony, Guangzhou Daily reports.
The shipment of the banned drug methamphetamine or ice was found inside a package that had been brought to the courier company on March 23 to be sent to an overseas address.
The courier said he became suspicious when the people who brought the parcel became anxious after being told the package in several carton boxes had to be opened and the contents examined in compliance with regulations.
He is the first winner in the incentive program launched by the Baiyun police recently as part of a crackdown on drugs.
Baiyun police working with couriers have intercepted six attempted drug mailings, tracked down 414 kilograms of drugs and paid out 155,000 yuan in rewards.
