Laborer begs thief to return stolen handset for late mom’s photo

A construction worker who lost his mobile phone to a thief is not giving up hope for its return, saying he desperately wants it back because it has the only copy of his dead mother’s photo.

The man, surnamed Wong, is offering HK$1,000, no questions asked, to anyone who returns it, news website hk01.com reports.

He asked the concerned individual to bring the phone to the Gammon construction site in Tseung Kwan O and to hand it to a security guard.

Wong’s co-workers helped him make placards about the stolen phone, hoping the thief will see them.

Pictures of Wong’s placards have been shared 1,000 times on social media, with netizens praising him for his devotion to his deceased mother and for his behavior throughout the incident.

He appealed to the thief’s good sense and encouraged him to work hard to escape poverty.

It has been three days since the phone was stolen but Wong is holding out hope.

He said the thief might have missed his appeals or the news in the papers and on social media.

The LG smartphone was stolen on Sunday, along with an undetermined amount of cash, Wong said.

He said the thief was kind enough to return his wallet and identity documents.
