An Indonesian domestic helper has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly half a million Hong Kong dollars worth of valuables from actress and Cantopop singer Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi, Apple Daily reported.
The maid, named Rospeni, 30, took three handbags, three pairs of shoes, four bangles, two necklaces, a bracelet, a pair of earrings and two rings, estimated to be worth about HK$460,000 (US$59.291) in total, an Eastern Magistrates’ Court heard Wednesday.
Rospeni worked in Cheung’s flat in Century Tower, Central, until her contract ended Tuesday.
Cheung’s assistant found the valuables in the maid’s luggage as she was leaving that day.
Rospeni admitted stealing them in February and March.
Cheung, who won the award for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2004, reported the theft to police.
Rospeni pleaded guilty in court, saying she stole the items out of greed.
The court adjourned the hearing to July 27 for further investigation and legal opinions, because of the high value of the items.
Rospeni did not ask for bail, as she no longer has a permanent dwelling in the city, Headline Daily reported.
A representative for Cheung told reporters this is a private matter and that she will not be responding to any questions.
In November last year, a Filipino domestic helper plunged to her death after admitting she had stolen jewelry from her employer, Celia Sie Lim-chi, a former TVB actress and radio host who now runs a modeling agency.
