Luzhou residents stunned by rare iridescent cloud

Residents of Luzhou in China’s Sichuan province received a pleasant surprise last weekend as they noticed a “rainbow cloud” in the sky in the evening after hot and humid weather during the day.

According to Sichuan News, the weather in Luzhou on July 9 was extremely hot, with the local observatory warning that temperatures would hit 38 degrees Celsius.

At 5:50 pm, the observatory suddenly issued an alert for a rainstorm.

As the rainstorm was approaching, the peculiar weather condition gave rise to a rarely seen natural phenomenon — the formation of an iridescent cloud.

Many people living in Gulin County captured the cloud formation on camera. Pictures posed online showed a large oval cloud with a rainbow color cap.

Some people remarked that it was the most amazing thing that they ever saw in their life.

According to meteorologists, the rare atmospheric phenomenon is due to heavy mist in the air, especially after a pouring rain, when sunlight diffracts off water droplets in the atmosphere.
