Chopper-wielding man arrested in Lan Kwai Fong

An apparently intoxicated man was arrested in Lan Kwai Fong in Central after causing a commotion as he brandished a cleaver while walking in the crowded entertainment district.

The 37-year-old man, surnamed Cheng, was apparently drunk when he stormed into Yung Kee Restaurant on 32 Wellington Street at around 10 p.m. on Thursday, Sing Tao Daily reports.

Cheng grabbed a cleaver used for chopping roast geese from the restaurant’s kitchen and went out on D’Aguilar Street, swinging the large knife every which way and sending pedestrians scampering away.

Police officers, including traffic enforcers, who were called to the scene drew their guns to prevent Cheng from hurting anyone.

According to hk01.com, a traffic police officer sneaked behind Cheng and grabbed the chopper, while his colleagues and several passersby joined in overpowering the man and holding him to the ground.

Cheng was arrested and taken to a police station for investigation.

A bar worker said he heard people screaming when he was going home after work on D’Aguilar Street, and saw a slightly obese man swinging a cleaver in public.

Police said three officers suffered bruises as well as cuts to their fingers and arms from tussling with the man.

The case has been classified as possession of weapon, pending further investigation.
