Two hikers drown after being swept by strong waves in Sai Kung

Two hikers drowned after a man tried to rescue a companion who was swept away by huge waves at a beach in Sai Kung on Sunday.

The incident happened around 1 p.m., while a 56-year-old man surnamed Wong and his wife were hiking with three other companions at a rocky beach in Tai Au Mun.

While looking for conches at the beach, one of their companions, a 57-year-old woman surnamed Ip, was suddenly swept by huge waves.

Wong immediately jumped into the waters and tried to pull her back, but instead of saving her, he, along with Ip, vanished in the sea.

Firemen, after receiving a call for help from the group, arrived at the scene and launched a rescue operation, only to see the two victims floating on the water unconscious about 50 meters away from the beach.

They were rushed to two different hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead.

Police who conducted an investigation found nothing suspicious.

About an hour later, a man was reported missing in Tai She Wan, Apple Daily reports.

The 23-year-old man, surnamed Lo, and several friends were cruising on a boat when they decided to go for a swim.

Lo did not make it back to the boat.

Rescuers were still searching the area by sea and air as of late Sunday night, but were unable to find him.

The weather conditions were not good, the report added.
