Fanny Law wants pro-separatist students probed by schools

Pro-independence students should have their family background investigated by their respective schools.

Public broadcaster RTHK is reporting that Executive Councillor Fanny Law wants schools to take action after a group called Studentlocalism said it will start promoting Hong Kong’s separation from mainland China in secondary schools after the summer holidays.

Speaking on a radio talk show, Law said an investigation into the family background of these students will help authorities understand what prompted them to develop separatist ideas.

Law, a former secretary for education, also said students should not be allowed to form groups in schools to promote secession.

She said young people could be misled on such issues.

Schools should invite delegates from mainland political bodies such as the National People’s Congress or the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference to give classroom talk, Law said.

She said this will help students better understand the political reality that independence for Hong Kong is not an option.
